Mythbuster: i’ve a high gpa and test score so I’m positively getting into USC

The Myth: all of those other application doesn’t matter if i’ve A gpa that is high and score.

The Verdict: Nope.

‘It’s all about the numbers’ appears to unfortunately be something I hear a serious bit when folks explore college admission. It makes me unfortunate because that is completely false when speaking about the admission procedure at USC. Students, counselors and parents tend to get very anxious about GPAs and test scores.

GPAs and test ratings are important, however they aren’t the just determining element in a pupil’s admission choice. Students deciding on USC will be automatically admitted never nor denied based solely on GPA and test scores.

Our company is to know a learning pupil the most effective we possibly can through the admission procedure. GPAs and test ratings help us figure out how well you do academically, but we would also like to make it to know you beyond that. We want to discover about the way you spend time outside associated with classroom. We are interested in learning your character and the life experiences you could have had up to this point. We want to learn why you are considering going to university at USC. We should study on your teachers or counselors their perspective on who you really are as student and human being. We can’t get all that information from just a GPA and a test score.

This is why we do not have a cutoff for GPAs and test scores. We wish to be sure you have the academic planning to succeed at USC, but that can be determined in a lot of ways. We evaluate your transcript while we calculate your GPA. What type of classes could be the student taking? Is the learning student challenging herself into the context of what can be obtained at her school? How does this relate solely to her standard testing? There isn’t A gpa that is magic and rating combination to determine all this.

Admission to USC is competitive. They are many, many qualified pupils who are applying to USC. We do not have spots for all of them within our incoming class. We use qualitative components such as task summaries, essays, and letters of suggestions to make distinctions among our many candidates that are excellent.

We could just take the highest GPAs and test scores and admit those students if we wanted. We would admit a very different class than the one we just enrolled if we did that. I also would n’t have job because a computer could do that. Our admission procedure is an individual one, and we are trying to bring a well-rounded course to USC. We aim to do this by utilizing your application that is entire to up to we can about you.

A high GPA and test rating is not a golden admission to admission at USC. We get beyond the numbers, and we hope you do too in the application.

Hello from one other side….

Interviews…another part regarding the university application process. We’re currently finishing up our interviews that are on-campus the end of November (Thanksgiving excluded.) You may additionally see us interviews that are conducting towns and cities in your area throughout the United States. At this point in the act, it is possible you’ve already gone through a college that is few, and I also’m certain at the end you left with either feelings of success, disappointment, excitement or an assortment of other adjectives that may describe the uncertainty that is an interview. Hopefully I can offer you a little insight into what we are thinking during those 30 minutes.

Our interviews generally last around 25 minutes and now we as admission counselors, spend afternoons, from 1:30 pm until 4:30 pm, interviewing around five students. So, exactly what’s actually going through our minds whenever we sit back over the table away from you? Well, that largely depends on you…

Are you visibly nervous? Sweating? About to break up in tears? Then i am most likely hoping that I can get shmoop pro you to calm down if the answer is yes. I will generally begin with questions that have clear cut responses: Tell me just what classes you might be taking this semester…What book are you reading in English right now? Students don’t have to think of these relevant concerns, they have the answers. Hopefully, this can help the person calm down, and we can have a conversation that is relaxed. If this been there as well, don’t worry, you are not the only person. Most of that time period students feel at ease pretty quickly after they realize the true nature of the interview. The ideas that are main try to extract from students are the following: 1) performs this person know why they truly are deciding on USC? Is there something specific they’ve seen here that is attractive to them? 2) Can this student think critically? Can they respond to a question that needs though or might not have an obvious solution? 3) Are they confident in their abilities and so are they sure they are able to succeed at USC? College is difficult and we want those who wish to be right here.

The vast majority of my interviews go smoothly with really few bumps within the road. There are of course moments when I repeat myself because we can not remember if I’ve asked question in this interview, or the one right before it. So in advance, please forgive me you the same question twice if I ask. My goal during an interview is to find a conversation that is solid so it feel less like an interview, and much more like one person looking to get to know another. So just come with an open mind, greet us with excitement (hopefully genuine), and everything will go smoothly.
